Gu Sou (瞽叟) was originally thought to be a blind man. Legend has it that Gu Sou was the father of Shun, and because he repeatedly tried to kill the virtuous Shun, he was ridiculed by later generations for having eyes that could not recognize the wise and the foolish, and was therefore called Gu Sou.
