Chinese Folk Tale: The Marriage of the Goddess

Preface: “The Marriage of the Goddess” mainly tells the story of the beautiful and kind-hearted Seven Immortals who fell in love with the simple and honest young man Dong Yong on earth, and privately descended from the Heavenly Court to the mortal world to break through the obstacles and marry Dong Yong. The Yu Huang Da Di (the Jade Emperor) in the sky was furious when he learned of the story, and ordered to stop them from being together. The story finally has a happy ending under the dual effects of love and affection.

玉Yù皇huáng大dà帝dì的de七qī女nǚ儿ér觉jué得de天tiān庭tíng很hěn冷lěng清qīng ， 她tā让ràng六liù位wèi姐jiě姐jiě一yī起qǐ去qù鹊què桥qiáo看kàn人rén间jiān 。

The seventh daughter of the Yu Huang Da Di felt that the heavenly court was very cold and she asked her six sisters to go together to Magpie Bridge to see the earth.

她Tā们men拨bō开kāi云yún雾wù ， 看kàn到dào长cháng江jiāng两liǎng岸àn的de人rén们men生shēng活huó丰fēng富fù多duō彩cǎi ， 很hěn羡xiàn慕mù 。

They lifted the clouds and mist and were envious to see the colorful lives of people on both sides of the Yangtze River.

看Kàn到dào董dǒng永yǒng努nǔ力lì学xué习xí ， 又yòu听tīng说shuō他tā父fù亲qīn病bìng了le没méi钱qián治zhì ， 七qī仙xiān女nǚ很hěn同tóng情qíng他tā 。

Seeing Dong Yong studying hard and hearing that his father was sick and had no money to cure him, the Seven Immortals sympathized with him.

七Qī仙xiān女nǚ和hé张zhāng巧qiǎo嘴zuǐ偷tōu偷tōu下xià凡fán ， 去qù帮bāng助zhù董dǒng永yǒng 。

The Seven Immortals and Zhang Qiao Zui secretly descended to earth to help Dong Yong.

董Dǒng永yǒng去qù丹dān阳yáng城chéng买mǎi药yào ， 路lù上shàng遇yù到dào受shòu伤shāng的de刘liú大dà侠xiá ， 他tā背bēi着zhe刘liú大dà侠xiá去qù城chéng里lǐ找zhǎo医yī生shēng 。

When Dong Yong went to Danyang City to buy medicine, he met the injured warrior Liu on the way and carried him to the city to find a doctor.

七Qī仙xiān女nǚ和hé张zhāng巧qiǎo嘴zuǐ来lái到dào人rén间jiān ， 看kàn到dào董dǒng永yǒng背bēi着zhe刘liú大dà侠xiá ， 以yǐ为wéi刘liú大dà侠xiá是shì董dǒng永yǒng的de父fù亲qīn ， 决jué定dìng帮bāng他tā 。

When the Seven Immortals and Zhang Qiao Zui came to earth, they saw Dong Yong carrying the Warrior Liu on his back and decided to help him, thinking that the Warrior Liu was Dong Yong’s father.

七Qī仙xiān女nǚ从cóng太tài上shàng老lǎo君jūn那nà儿ér要yào来lái仙xiān丹dān ， 救jiù活huó了le刘liú大dà侠xiá ， 刘liú大dà侠xiá成chéng了le她tā的de保bǎo护hù神shén 。

The Seven Immortals asked for an elixir from the Tai Shang Lao Jun (the Goddess of Mercy) to revive the Warrior, and the Warrior became her protector.

七Qī仙xiān女nǚ和hé张zhāng巧qiǎo嘴zuǐ为wèi了le方fāng便biàn在zài人rén间jiān玩wán ， 让ràng槐huái树shù精jīng当dàng她tā们men的de “ 爹diē ”， 找zhǎo了le个gè府fǔ邸dǐ住zhù下xià 。

The Seven Immortals and Zhang Qiao Zui let the spirit of the locust tree be their “father” and found a residence for them to play on earth.

玉Yù皇huáng大dà帝dì知zhī道dào她tā们men下xià凡fán后hòu ， 派pài雷léi公gōng电diàn母mǔ来lái抓zhuā她tā们men 。

When the Yu Huang Da Di found out that they had come down to earth, he sent the Lei Gong (the Thunder God) and the Dian Mu (the Mother of Lightning) to catch them.

刘Liú大dà侠xiá多duō次cì打dǎ败bài雷léi公gōng电diàn母mǔ ， 救jiù出chū了le七qī仙xiān女nǚ和hé张zhāng巧qiǎo嘴zuǐ 。

Liu warrior defeats the Thunder God and the Mother of Lightning many times and rescues the Seven Immortals and Zhang Qiao Zui.

七Qī仙xiān女nǚ和hé张zhāng巧qiǎo嘴zuǐ都dōu喜xǐ欢huān董dǒng永yǒng ， 但dàn董dǒng永yǒng因yīn为wèi父fù亲qīn去qù世shì ， 成chéng了le傅fù官guān保bǎo的de家jiā奴nú 。

Both the Seven Immortals and Zhang Qiao Zui loved Dong Yong, but Dong Yong had become Fu Guanbao’s domestic slave because his father had died.

七Qī仙xiān女nǚ让ràng槐huái树shù精jīng为wèi她tā和hé董dǒng永yǒng做zuò媒méi ， 董dǒng永yǒng勉miǎn强qiǎng答dā应yìng了le婚hūn事shì 。

The Seven Immortals asked the Sophora Spirit to play matchmaker for her and Dong Yong, and Dong Yong reluctantly agreed to the marriage.

傅Fù官guān保bǎo也yě喜xǐ欢huān七qī仙xiān女nǚ ， 但dàn被bèi拒jù绝jué ， 于yú是shì想xiǎng毒dú计jì害hài董dǒng永yǒng 。

Fu Guanbao also liked the Seven Immortals, but was rejected, so he tried to harm Dong Yong with a poisonous plan.

张Zhāng巧qiǎo嘴zuǐ嫉jí妒dù七qī仙xiān女nǚ ， 提tí出chū “ 比bǐ武wǔ招zhāo亲qīn ”， 结jié果guǒ乘chéng龙lóng快kuài婿xù是shì个gè惯guàn偷tōu 。

Zhang Qiao Zui was jealous of the Seven Immortals and proposed a marriage contest, but her son-in-law turned out to be a habitual thief.

张Zhāng巧qiǎo嘴zuǐ被bèi抬tái进jìn傅fù府fǔ ， 七qī仙xiān女nǚ被bèi抬tái到dào惯guàn偷tōu家jiā ， 发fā现xiàn新xīn郎láng不bù是shì董dǒng永yǒng后hòu ， 她tā救jiù出chū了le董dǒng永yǒng 。

Zhang Qiao Zui was carried into the Fu’s house, and the Seven Immortals were carried to the house of the thief. After realizing that the groom was not Dong Yong, she rescued Dong Yong.

老Lǎo槐huái树shù开kāi口kǒu说shuō话huà ， 为wèi他tā们men做zuò媒méi证zhèng婚hūn ， 两liǎng人rén拜bài堂táng成chéng亲qīn 。

The old acacia tree speaks and witnesses their marriage, and they are married.

七Qī仙xiān女nǚ成chéng了le董dǒng永yǒng的de妻qī子zi ， 张zhāng巧qiǎo嘴zuǐ成chéng了le傅fù官guān保bǎo的de妻qī子zi 。

The Seven Immortals became Dong Yong’s wife and Zhang Qiao Zui became Fu Guan Bao’s wife.

傅Fù官guān保bǎo和hé张zhāng巧qiǎo嘴zuǐ处chù处chù刁diāo难nàn七qī仙xiān女nǚ和hé董dǒng永yǒng ， 但dàn七qī仙xiān女nǚ用yòng法fǎ力lì克kè服fú了le困kùn难nán 。

Fu Guanbao and Zhang Qiao Zui made things difficult for the Seven Immortals and Dong Yong, but the Seven Immortals overcame the difficulties with their magic power.

张Zhāng巧qiǎo嘴zuǐ毒dú死sǐ了le公gōng公gōng ， 嫁jià祸huò董dǒng永yǒng ， 七qī仙xiān女nǚ为wèi救jiù董dǒng永yǒng ， 打dǎ败bài鬼guǐ怪guài妖yāo魔mó ， 恢huī复fù了le公gōng公gōng的de阳yáng寿shòu 。

Zhang Qiao Zui poisons her father-in-law and frames Dong Yong. The Seven Immortals defeat the ghosts and demons to save Dong Yong and restore his life.

傅Fù官guān保bǎo让ràng七qī仙xiān女nǚ一yī夜yè织zhī出chū一yī百bǎi匹pǐ锦jǐn缎duàn ， 七qī仙xiān女nǚ找zhǎo来lái姐jiě姐jiě们men帮bāng忙máng ， 终zhōng于yú完wán成chéng了le任rèn务wù 。

Fu Guan Bao asked the Seven Immortals to weave a hundred pieces of brocade in one night. The Seven Immortals enlisted the help of their sisters and finally accomplished the task.

张Zhāng巧qiǎo嘴zuǐ又yòu说shuō七qī仙xiān女nǚ是shì妖yāo怪guài ， 但dàn董dǒng永yǒng和hé七qī仙xiān女nǚ最zuì终zhōng结jié束shù了le为wéi奴nú的de日rì子zi ， 一yī起qǐ回huí家jiā 。

Zhang Qiao Zui again said that the Seven Immortals were demons, but Dong Yong and the Seven Immortals finally ended their days as slaves and went home together.

张Zhāng巧qiǎo嘴zuǐ多duō次cì加jiā害hài七qī仙xiān女nǚ和hé董dǒng永yǒng都dōu未wèi得dé逞chěng ， 升shēng天tiān状zhuàng告gào七qī仙xiān女nǚ 。

Zhang Qiao Zui unsuccessfully victimized the Seven Immortals and Dong Yong several times and ascended to heaven to sue the Seven Immortals.

王Wáng母mǔ娘niáng娘niáng剔tī去qù了le张zhāng巧qiǎo嘴zuǐ的de仙xiān骨gǔ ， 贬biǎn她tā做zuò了le凡fán人rén 。

The Xi Wang Mu removed Zhang Qiao Zui’s immortal bones and relegated her to mortal status.

玉Yù皇huáng大dà帝dì命mìng托tuō塔tǎ天tiān王wáng下xià凡fán捉zhuō拿ná七qī仙xiān女nǚ ， 七qī仙xiān女nǚ为wèi救jiù董dǒng永yǒng ， 答dā应yìng归guī天tiān 。

The Yu Huang Da Di ordered the Tuo Ta Tian Wang (Heavenly King of Tota) to come down to capture the Seven Immortals. The Seven Immortals agreed to return to heaven in order to save Dong Yong.

七Qī仙xiān女nǚ将jiàng金jīn簪zān留liú给gěi了le董dǒng永yǒng ， 并bìng留liú下xià一yī封fēng手shǒu巾jīn ， 约yuē来lái年nián春chūn暖nuǎn花huā开kāi时shí在zài槐huái荫yīn树shù下xià送sòng子zǐ归guī 。

The Seven Immortals left a gold hairpin to Dong Yong and a handkerchief to send her son home under the acacia tree when the flowers bloomed in the coming spring.

董Dǒng永yǒng痛tòng失shī爱ài妻qī ， 醒xǐng来lái后hòu疯fēng了le ， 被bèi槐huái树shù精jīng和hé赤chì脚jiǎo大dà仙xiān治zhì好hǎo 。

Dong Yong lost his beloved wife and woke up mad. He was cured by the spirit of the locust tree and the Barefoot Fairy.

傅Fù官guān保bǎo救jiù了le宰zǎi相xiàng ， 当dāng了le官guān ， 张zhāng巧qiǎo嘴zuǐ设shè计jì让ràng董dǒng永yǒng将jiāng金jīn簪zān献xiàn给gěi皇huáng上shàng ， 槐huái树shù精jīng想xiǎng出chū妙miào计jì ， 董dǒng永yǒng献xiàn出chū了le金jīn簪zān 。

Fu Guanbao saved the prime minister and became an official. Zhang Qiao Zui devised a plan for Dong Yong to offer the golden hairpin to the emperor, and the Sophora Tree Spirit came up with a brilliant plan, which led to Dong Yong’s offering of the golden hairpin.

董Dǒng永yǒng被bèi封fēng为wèi献xiàn宝bǎo状zhuàng元yuán ， 多duō次cì受shòu傅fù官guān保bǎo打dǎ击jī ， 但dàn总zǒng能néng逢féng凶xiōng化huà吉jí 。

Dong Yong was named the Scholar of Offering Treasures. He was hit by Fu Guan Bao many times, but always managed to turn misfortune into good fortune.

董Dǒng永yǒng说shuō服fú皇huáng上shàng ， 赦shè免miǎn了le傅fù官guān保bǎo和hé张zhāng巧qiǎo嘴zuǐ 。

Dong Yong persuaded the Emperor to pardon Fu Guan Bao and Zhang Qiao Zui.

七Qī仙xiān女nǚ被bèi抓zhuā回huí天tiān庭tíng后hòu ， 被bèi护hù法fǎ神shén鞭biān打dǎ ， 王wáng母mǔ娘niáng娘niáng和hé赤chì脚jiǎo大dà仙xiān救jiù出chū了le她tā 。

After the Seven Immortals were captured and returned to Heaven, they were whipped by the Guardian Gods. The Xi Wang Mu and the Chi Jiao Da Xian (Barefoot Contessa) rescued her.

七Qī仙xiān女nǚ生shēng下xià儿ér子zi后hòu ， 玉yù皇huáng大dà帝dì又yòu派pài护hù法fǎ神shén刺cì杀shā他tā ， 但dàn被bèi王wáng母mǔ娘niáng娘niáng和hé大dà姐jiě暗àn中zhōng保bǎo护hù 。

After the Seven Immortals gave birth to a son, the Yu Huang Da Di sent the Guardian Deities to assassinate him again, but they were secretly protected by the Xi Wang Mu and Big Sister.

王Wáng母mǔ娘niáng娘niáng大dà闹nào灵líng霄xiāo殿diàn ， 玉yù皇huáng大dà帝dì只zhǐ好hǎo同tóng意yì七qī仙xiān女nǚ将jiàng孩hái子zi送sòng回huí人rén间jiān 。

When the Xi Wang Mu made a scene in the Spiritual Palace, the Yu Huang Da Di had to agree that the Seven Immortals return the child to earth.

玉Yù皇huáng大dà帝dì看kàn望wàng女nǚ儿ér ， 得dé知zhī她tā的de儿ér子zi很hěn可kě爱ài ， 很hěn感gǎn动dòng ， 在zài王wáng母mǔ娘niáng娘niáng和hé仙xiān女nǚ们men的de劝quàn说shuō下xià ， 他tā改gǎi变biàn了le看kàn法fǎ 。

The Yu Huang Da Di visits his daughter and is touched to learn that she has a lovely son. He is persuaded by the Xi Wang Mu and the fairies to change his mind.

玉Yù皇huáng大dà帝dì被bèi七qī仙xiān女nǚ和hé董dǒng永yǒng的de真zhēn情qíng打dǎ动dòng ， 同tóng意yì他tā们men在zài人rén间jiān永yǒng远yuǎn相xiāng伴bàn 。

Impressed by the true love of the Seven Immortals and Dong Yong, the Yu Huang Da Di agrees that they should stay together on earth forever.
