Preface: The Long Nu worshipping the Goddess of Mercy is a legendary story in the Buddhist scriptures, based on which later generations have written related literary works and sculptures of the same name. On both sides of the statue of Guan Yin, there is a pair of boys and girls, the boy is called “Shan Cai” and the girl is called “Long Nu”. The “Long Nu”, according to Buddhist scriptures, is the youngest daughter of the Long King PoJIe Luo, and is a famous figure at the Dharma Sessions. The Long Nu was a famous figure at the Dharma Sessions. The Long Nu was a wise and enlightened person since her childhood, and at the age of eight, she had already matured her good roots, and manifested herself to become a Buddha in the public. In order to assist Guan Shi Yin Bodhisattva in spreading enlightenment to all sentient beings, the Long Nu manifested from the Buddha’s body into the body of a virgin, and became the right-hand attendant of Guan Shi Yin Bodhisattva.
Long Nu is the little princess of the Long King of the East Seau.
Long Nu is beautiful and clever, so the Long King dotes on her very much.
One day, Long Nu heard that there was a lively Fish Lantern Festival in the human world, and she insisted on going.
The Long King shook his head and said, “The human world is complicated. You’re not suitable to go.”
Long Nu coaxed and pretended to cry, and the Long King still wouldn’t agree.
Long Nu thought, “You don’t let me go, but I will go anyway!”
So, she slipped out of the Crystal Palace quietly when it was deep at night and turned into a fishing girl to come to the Fish Lantern Festival.
There were many colorful fish lanterns in the little fishing town. Long Nu was dazzled and very happy.
Suddenly, a cup of cold tea was poured down from the attic and hit Long Nu on the head.
Long Nu was shocked because after she turned into a girl, she couldn’t touch water. If she did, she couldn’t maintain her human form.
She was extremely anxious and afraid of revealing her Long form and causing a storm, so she ran towards the seashore desperately.
As soon as she arrived at the beach, she turned into a big fish and lay on the sand, unable to move.
At this moment, two young fishermen saw the big fish and decided to carry it to the street to sell.
In the evening, Guan Yin Bodhisattva was meditating in the Purple Bamboo Forest and saw all this. She felt compassion and asked Shan Cai to go and buy the fish to release it.
Shan Cai had no money, so Guan Yin Bodhisattva said, “Take a handful of incense ash from the incense burner.”
Shan Cai went to the Guan Yin Temple, grabbed a handful of incense ash, and rushed to the fishing town quickly.
He found the two young fishermen, exchanged the incense ash for the big fish, and then took it to the seashore to release it.
When the fish touched the seawater, it immediately made a splash and swam far away. Then it nodded to Shan Cai and disappeared quickly.
Back in the Long Palace of the East Sea, everyone was in a mess since the little princess disappeared.
It wasn’t until dawn that the little princess returned to the Crystal Palace.
The Long King asked her angrily where she had been. The little princess answered truthfully and said that Guan Yin Bodhisattva had sent Shan Cai to save her.
The Long King’s face changed drastically when he heard this. He was afraid that Guan Yin Bodhisattva would tell the Jade Emperor about this matter, and he would be accused of “not educating his daughter strictly”.
So, in a fit of anger, he expelled the little princess from the Crystal Palace.
The little princess was extremely sad and didn’t know where to go.
The next day, she cried and came to the Lotus Ocean.
When Guan Yin Bodhisattva found out, she asked Shan Cai to go and pick her up.
Shan Cai came to the little princess and asked her with a smile if she still remembered him.
The little princess blushed and said, “Are you Shan Cai brother? You’re my savior!”
Saying this, she was about to bow.
Shan Cai held her hand and said, “Come on, Guan Yin Bodhisattva asked me to come and pick you up!”
They walked into the Purple Bamboo Forest hand in hand. As soon as the little princess saw Guan Yin Bodhisattva, she bowed.
Guan Yin Bodhisattva liked the little princess very much and let her live in a cave near the Chaoyin Cave with Shan Cai like brother and sister.
This cave was later called the “Shancai Longnu Cave”.
From then on, the little princess followed Guan Yin Bodhisattva. Although the Long King regretted his decision, the little princess fell in love with the scenery of Mount Putuo and never wanted to return to the Crystal Palace again.
