Preface: ‘The Wise Beheading of the Unicorn Long’ is a folk legend circulating around Zhoushan Islands, Zhejiang Province, which tells the story of how Jiao Jiao killed the Unicorn Long and got rid of the harm for the people.
In the east of Dinghai, there is a village called Shangzhangjia.
Behind the village, there stands a hundred-meter-high Lion Mountain.
To the south of the mountain, there is a natural ancient cave, which is locally known as the “Unicorn Long Cave”.
Legend has it that, a long time ago, this cave was inhabited by a fierce unicorn Long.
It was not only cruel but also often turned into a handsome man to break into people’s houses and cause trouble at midnight.
This unicorn Long was actually the youngest son of the Long King of the East Sea, ugly in appearance but fond of beautiful women.
The beautiful fish girls and shrimp girls in the aquatic world were terrified of him.
Feeling that he could no longer find satisfactory girls in the aquatic world, he came to Shangzhangjia Village.
He turned into a scholarly young man and teased the girls in the village everywhere.
One day, as he passed by Lion Mountain, he saw a steamed bun shop at the foot of the mountain.
He went into the shop to rest and bought a few baskets of steamed buns to fill his stomach.
The owner of the shop was a widow surnamed Li, who was in her mid-thirties and lived alone, making a living by selling steamed buns.
Seeing how pretty Li was, the unicorn Long came to the shop every day to buy buns and flirt with her.
Over time, Li was seduced by the unicorn Long and became his mistress.
The unicorn Long no longer returned to the Long Palace and found a cave to live in on the south side of Lion Mountain.
He slept during the day and sneaked into the village to meet Li at night.
Later, as Li aged and lost her beauty, the unicorn Long began to neglect her and looked for new lovers in the village.
Once, a girl named Zhao Jiaojiao passed by Shangzhangjia Village.
She was skilled in martial arts and traveled the world, dedicated to doing righteous deeds.
She went into the shop to buy buns to fill her hunger and happened to encounter the unicorn Long there.
Seeing how young and beautiful Jiaojiao was, the unicorn Long’s mouth watered.
He turned into a shop assistant and delivered buns to Jiaojiao, secretly sprinkling sleeping powder into them.
Jiaojiao was very hungry and grabbed the buns to eat, finishing them quickly before falling asleep in a daze.
Seeing this, the unicorn Long was delighted and picked up Jiaojiao to leave.
Returning to the cave, he revealed his true form and blew a cool breeze at Jiaojiao, trying to wake her up.
When Jiaojiao woke up, she found herself in the darkness with a black monster standing in front of her.
Knowing that she had been taken advantage of, she sternly asked what the creature was.
The Unicorn Long smiles and says that he is the seventh prince of the Long King of the East China Sea and wants to be related to Jiao Jiao.
Although Jiaojiao was scared, she remained calm on the surface and thought of ways to subdue the evil Long.
She pretended to negotiate with the unicorn Long and said that a Long deity and a mortal could not marry and it would cause him to suffer.
The unicorn Long was not convinced and said that the seven fairies in heaven dared to marry Dong Yong, a mortal.
Jiaojiao then said that with his iron scales and armor, it would be difficult to marry.
Hearing that Jiaojiao seemed to be swayed, the unicorn Long happily said that by removing the three scales under his throat, he could turn into an ordinary mortal.
Pretending to believe him, Jiaojiao asked him to transform again for her to see.
The unicorn Long became so overjoyed that he raised his claw to remove the scales.
Seeing an opportunity, Jiaojiao quickly flew out a golden dart, hitting the unicorn Long’s throat.
The unicorn Long let out a long howl, his Long eyes bulged out, and his tail swung wildly before he died.
Jiaojiao killed the unicorn Long and rid the villagers of the evil, and everyone was very grateful to her.
