Carp Jumping Dragon Gate refers to the legend that the Yellow River carp will change into a Long when it jumps over the Long Men Gate.
This story is often used to describe a promotion and other soaring successes, as well as a metaphor for a person who has the spirit to move forward against the current and rise to the top.
Legend has it that in the old days, before Longmen Mountain was cut through, the flow of Yi Shui to this area was blocked, and a large lake was formed in the south of the mountain as a result.
The carp in the Yellow River heard that the scenery of Longmen Mountain was especially beautiful, and they all wanted to go to see it.
So they traveled from Mengjin, Henan Province, through the Luo and Yi Rivers to the mouth of the Longmen Splash.
However, there is no waterway on Longmen Mountain, so the carp can’t get up there and have to gather at the foot of the north mountain.
At that moment, a big red carp had an idea: “How about we jump over Long Men Mountain?”
The other carp were scared, thinking it was too high and they would fall to their deaths if they didn’t jump well.
But the big red carp was brave and said, “I’ll jump first and try.”
The big red carp started jumping hard from a long way off, and all of a sudden it jumped halfway up into the clouds, and carried the clouds and the rain forward with it.
But a heavenly fire came after it and burned off its tail.
The big red carp endured the pain and continued to jump, finally crossing Long Men Mountain and landing in the lake south of the mountain, turning into a giant Long.
The carp in the north of the mountain were too frightened to jump when they saw this.
At that moment, a huge Long descended from the sky and said, “Don’t be afraid, I am the big red carp, because I jumped over the Long Men gate and became a Long. You must be brave and jump too!”
Encouraged, the carp began to try jumping Long Men Moutain one by one.
However, only a few carp jumped over and became Longs; most couldn’t and fell through the air, leaving a black scar on their foreheads.
This black scar is still growing on the forehead of the Yellow River Carp.
