Chinese Mythology: Ao Guang, the Long King of the East China Sea

The Long King of the East Sea , Dong Hai Long Wang(东海龙王), Ao Guang (敖广,敖光), is the king of the Long Clan in ancient Chinese myths and legends, the first of the ‘Four Long Kings of the Four Seas’, and also the king of all aquatic races. He ruled over the East China Sea, dominating rain, thunder, floods, tidal waves, tsunamis and so on.

The Long King of the East Sea is a green Long.

He holds a high status and is known as one of the “Four Symbols of Heaven.”

The green Long represents the east and spring.

He guards the East Sea and controls the waves, tides, and marine weather.

The Long King of the East Sea is closely related to sea voyage, fishing, and water safety.

He lives in the Crystal Palace on the seabed of the East Sea, which is splendidly decorated.

The palace is magnificent and controls everything in the East Sea area.

The Long King of the East Sea is also related to rain and hydrology.

He can pray for rain and regulate water sources, which are closely linked to agriculture and water interests.

People pray to him for rain to ensure harvests and irrigation.

Although he is the god of rain, other Long kings usually complete the task of raining.

The Long King of the East Sea also holds an important position in Buddhism and Taoism.

He is one of the Buddhist Dharma Protectors, guarding Buddhist teachings and beliefs.

In Taoism, he is the ruler of the East Sea Long Palace.

The Long King of the East Sea often appears in literary classics.

In “Journey to the West 《西游记》,” Sun Wu Kong (孙悟空)  got “Will-Bearing Golden-Banded Staff (金箍棒).”

In “Investiture of the Gods 《封神演义》,” he avenged his son’s death by forcing Ne Zha (哪吒)  to commit suicide.
