Chinese Mythology: Chi You, Lord of Soldiers

Chi You (蚩尤), the legendary manufacture of weapons, but also rumored to be the Lord God of War, and the Huang Di (黄帝), Yan Di (炎帝) and called “Chinese three ancestors”. It is said to be the leader of Jiuli (九黎) Tribe in the east, with 81 brothers, rumored to use metal (copper) as weapon, and then fought with the Huang Di in Zhuo Lu (now southeast of Zhuo Lu, Hebei Province), and failed to be killed by Ying Long(应龙).

Chi You is one of the three great ancestors of the Chinese nation and the god of war in Chinese mythology.

Chi You’s appearance is very special, he has eight hands, eight feet, four eyes, six arms, and a pair of bull’s horns on his head.

Legend has it that he had 81 brothers, each very brave.

Chi You originally and Yan Di is a tribe, but because of the conflict, he left himself and became the leader of the Jiu Li tribe.

Jiu Li tribe is an alliance of nine tribes.

One day, Chi You dreamed that the heavens told him to attack Yan Di and Huang Di.

He defeated Yan Di.

Yan Di then joined hands with the Huang Di and fought with Chi You at Zhuo Lu.

At first, Chi You had the upper hand by virtue of his copper and iron weapons and bravery.

Eventually, Chiyu was defeated and legend has it that he was killed by Ying Long.

Chi You’s body was divided and buried in different places.

After Chi You’s defeat, his people scattered and occupied the lower reaches of the Yellow River and the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River.

Legend has it that they formed a new tribal alliance called “Three Miao”.

After the death of Chi You, the Huang Di and his descendants are respected Chi You as the “Lord of War” and “God of War”.
