In the Han Dynasty, there was a scholar named Liu Xiang. When he went to the capital to take the imperial examination, he took a detour to climb Mount Hua.
On Mount Hua, there was a temple. The temple deity, Hua Yue San Niang, was a beautiful and kind fairy. After being sent to Mount Hua by the Queen Mother of the West, she had been living a lonely life.
One day, while San Niang was singing and dancing in the temple, she suddenly saw Liu Xiang enter the temple gate. She quickly turned into a statue.
Liu Xiang was fascinated by the statue of San Niang and thought how happy he would be if he could marry her. Unfortunately, she was just a statue without emotions.
With deep regret, Liu Xiang took out his pen and ink and wrote his admiration for San Niang on the wall.
Seeing this, San Niang was also attracted to Liu Xiang and decided to defy the heavenly rules and marry him.
So, San Niang turned into a mortal woman and confessed her true feelings to Liu Xiang. The two of them became husband and wife.
When Liu Xiang’s exam was approaching, San Niang was pregnant. They were reluctant to separate. Liu Xiang gave San Niang a piece of jade called “Chen Xiang” and said that if they had a son, they could name him “Chen Xiang”.
Liu Xiang passed the exam in the capital and was appointed as an inspector of Yangzhou Prefecture. San Niang stayed on Mount Hua, but she ran into trouble.
San Niang’s brother, Er Lang Shen, found out that she had married a mortal and wanted to capture her to be punished in heaven. San Niang had a treasure called the Bao Lian Deng, but Er Lang Shen had his dog steal it and pressed San Niang under the Black Cloud Cave on Mount Hua.
San Niang gave birth to Chen Xiang in the cave and begged a yaksha to send him to Liu Xiang in Yangzhou.
When Chen Xiang grew up, he learned about his mother’s situation and decided to rescue her. After enduring many hardships, he finally arrived at Mount Hua.
He shouted loudly for his mother and attracted the attention of the passing Thunder Deity. The deity taught him martial arts and on his sixteenth birthday, gave him an axe to rescue his mother.
Chen Xiang flew to the Black Cloud Cave on Mount Hua and called for his mother. After hearing him, San Niang was excited and told him to ask his uncle for mercy.
Chen Xiang begged Er Lang Shen, but Er Lang Shen wanted to fight him. Chen Xiang fought with him and with the help of the Four Fairy Maidens, defeated Er Lang Shen and retrieved the Bao Lian Deng.
Chen Xiang immediately flew back to Mount Hua, split the mountain with his axe, and rescued his mother. San Niang and Chen Xiang hugged tightly, tears streaming down their faces.
Later, Er Lang Shen apologized to San Niang and Chen Xiang, and Chen Xiang was also granted an immortal position by the Yu Di. From then on, San Niang, Liu Xiang, and Chen Xiang lived happily together as a family.
