Chinese Mythology: Xi Wang Mu and her Peach Fairy

Preface: Dong Shuang Cheng, female, originating from Zhejiang Province, is a maid (or disciple) of the Xi Wang Mu, an ancient myth and legend. After the death of the Shang Dynasty, she became an immortal by the West Lake, and after her ascension, she became a fairy of the West Pond by the side of the Xi Wang Mu. She was good at playing the sheng and knew the rhythm of music, and was deeply loved by the Xi Wang Mu. When the Xi Wang Mu met Emperor Wu of Han Dynasty, Dong Shuang Cheng was the one who served the peaches. This was also one of the duties of Dong Shuang Cheng, who was in charge of the Peach Garden for the Xi Wang Mu.

Once upon a time, there was a farmer’s daughter named Dong Shuang Cheng. She was plain-looking but clever and diligent. When she was 15, her parents wanted her to marry a wealthy landlord, but she refused and ran away to a Taoist temple to practice. Later, the Xi Wang Mu chose her as a maid because she was the most capable.

One year, there was a severe drought, and the farmers had no harvest. Many people starved to death. Shuang Cheng saw this and was very worried. She found the Rain God and wanted him to make it rain. She discovered that the Rain God had stolen peaches of immortality and threatened him to make it rain or she would tell the Xi Wang Mu. The Rain God had to comply.

The Xi Wang Mu found out that the peaches were missing and asked Shuang Cheng. Shuang Cheng said she knew who stole them but had promised not to reveal it and requested punishment. Although the Xi Wang Mu felt sorry for her, she still sentenced her to practice in solitude on a sea island for three years, with the privilege of seeing her once a year on July 18th.

Shuang Cheng lived a humble but free life on earth. Besides practicing, she also farmed and chopped wood. July 18th was the Xi Wang Mu’s birthday, and she would fly up to celebrate. After her sentence was completed, she returned to the Xi Wang Mu’s side and was even more favored. She was also given a new task of inspecting the people’s livelihood.

One year, there was a drought again, and she went to the Rain God. The Rain God promised to make it rain before the Mid-Autumn Festival. That’s why there’s a saying in China, “The drought will end before the Mid-Autumn Festival.”

After returning to heaven, Shuang Cheng visited Huangyangjian every year to speak and act for the people. She always flew to heaven from a rock on Huangyangjian, so the people called this rock “Fairy Bridge.”

A hundred steps east of the “Dragon Head” hill, there is a stone step about 5 meters long, known as the “Fairy Bridge.” It is said that Dong Shuang Cheng would ascend to heaven from here every July 18th.
