Chinese Mythology: The Legend of Fu Xi

Fu Xi (伏羲) is the legendary ancestor of Chinese civilization, also known as the “ Zu (祖)” , is honored as the“Three Emperors (三皇) ” of the first.

Long, long ago, in a place called Huaxi Kingdom, there lived a girl named Huaxi.

One day, she went to play in Leze and saw a super huge footprint, so she curiously stepped on it.

To her surprise, after stepping on it, she became pregnant and carried the baby for twelve whole years!

Later, she gave birth to a special son who had the body of a snake and the head of a human, and everyone called him Fu Xi.

Fu Xi was very powerful, he unified Huaxia, set the capital in Chen, and held a sealing and sacrificing ceremony on Mount Tai.

Fu Xi had a rich imagination, he combined the characteristics of many animals such as the body of a python, the head of a crocodile, and the antlers of a stag, to create the Longn totem, so we now all say that we are descendants of the Long.

In that era, people knew very little about nature and were afraid of wind, rain, thunder, and lightning.

Fu Xi was very smart, and he wanted to understand all of this.

So, he often stood on Guatai Mountain to observe the sun, moon, stars, and terrain, and also studied the footprints and patterns of animals.

One day, while thinking on Guatai Mountain, he heard a strange roar and saw a Longon-horse (龙马) jump out of a cave, the Long-horse had the head of a Long and the body of a horse, with very special patterns on it.

The Long-horse jumped onto a stone shaped like a Tai Chi symbol in the Wei River, and when Fu Xi saw all of this, he suddenly got inspired and drew the Eight Trigrams.

Fu Xi also imitated spiders spinning webs and invented fishing nets to use for fishing and hunting.

He also established the human marriage system, using deerskin as a betrothal gift, and let people take their surnames based on animals, plants, residences, or official positions, so that there would be no chaotic marriages or incest.

From that time on, Chinese surnames have been passed down like this.
